RPattz will appear with 'Water for Elephants' co-star Reese Witherspoon at April 3 show. By Gil Kaufman Robert Pattinson Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Robert Pattinson isn't following in the footsteps of fellow thespian Gwyneth Paltrow and going country. Though the "Twilight" star has dabbled in music, he's only expected to hand out the hardware, not pick up a guitar, at the upcoming Academy of Country Music Awards show in Las Vegas on April 3. According to People magazine, Pattinson will appear with his "Water for Elephants" co-star Reese Witherspoon as a presenter at the show, which will air on CBS. The onscreen couple will appear alongside hosts Reba McEntire and Blake Shelton, along with other presenters Nancy O'Dell and Ryan Seacrest. Among the performers on the broadcast will be Carrie Underwood, Dierks Bentley, Zac Brown Band with James Taylor, Alabama, Ronnie Dunn, Sara Evans, Martina McBride and the Entertainer of the Year nominees: Taylor Swift, Jason Aldean, Toby Keith, Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley and Keith Urban. Pattinson is used to sharing the stage with his "Twilight" co-star Kristen Stewart, but he seems perfectly comfortable with Nashville native Witherspoon as well. "It felt like it was kind of magical in many ways, because we were out in the desert shooting," he said of the shoot for "Elephants" with Witherspoon. "There was nothing from the modern world around. It was a different experience for me. It wasn't in a studio or anything." He might also press her for tips on appealing to the country crowd, something Reese knows plenty about thanks to her Academy Award win for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line." By Mawuse Ziegbe Black Eyed Peas perform during the Super Bowl XLV halftime show Photo: Getty Images The Black Eyed Peas promised a party at the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday (February 6), and the pop supernovas definitely delivered, with a performance teeming with lights, dancers and surprise appearances from celebrity pals. Following a Chatter.com commercial that showed animated versions of the Peas showing off their social-media skills, the group kicked things off with their 2009 smash "I Gotta Feeling," descending from the ceiling on illuminated platforms onto a stage surrounded by a cluster of dancers clad in white bodysuits. The foursome led the team of fist-pumping troops in "Tron"-like getups, with Taboo sporting an outfit covered in flashing lights, will.i.am rocking a shiny hairpiece, Apl.de.ap wearing huge bright studs and Fergie vamping it up in bling-laden shoulder pads. When the speaker-busting bass of "Boom Boom Pow" dropped, the dancers dispersed across the field to create arrow-shaped formations as the glow-in-the-dark lights on their suits illuminated the stadium. Then rumored surprise guest Slash of Guns N' Roses rose from below the stage for a "Sweet Child O' Mine" duet with Fergie. The GNR great rocked a finger-searing solo in a studded version of his signature black top hat as more angular platforms and dancers moved across the gridiron. The platforms were bearing scores of marching-band musicians who blasted their horns and pounded away on their drums as the Peas went into "Pump It" and blue lights splashed across the production. Quick streams of fog heralded the arrival of the Peas' second surprise guest, Usher, who swooped in on a long chain to bust out his will.i.am-assisted joint "OMG." Rocking a sparkly collar on an otherwise all-white ensemble, the R&B hitmaker cranked out several counts of energetic choreography, enlivening moves from his "OMG" video and at one point jumping over Will and landing in a split. A spray of pyro ushered in the collective's breakout 2003 hit "Where Is the Love?" as the oddly shaped platforms spelled out the word "Love" in bright-red letters. The team of dancers, which appeared to have multiplied to over 100, formed hearts across the field as will updated the lyrics of the smash with lines like, "Obama, let's get these educated." Then the group jumped ahead to their most recent single, 2010's "The Time (Dirty Bit)," as several back up hoofers rocking cubed helmets joined the Peas onstage and dancers lined up along the gridiron to simultaneously bust out the Running Man, a move which drew cheers from the crowd. The platinum-selling Peas wrapped up the performance with a reprise of "I Gotta Feeling," as the quartet triumphantly signed off amid of blitz of fog, firepower and flashing lights. Ripping the halftime show was clearly a touching moment for will, who tweeted beforehand, "Me and apl started the peas when we were 16 yesterday we were dreamin now were livin it. Wow. I'm not crying out of sadness or nervousness its joy and pride and memories and the journey." And once the crew left the stage, the frontman was not only proud, but pumped. "That was so freakin sick," he wrote. "Wow...!!!" What did you think of the Black Eyed Peas' Super Bowl performance? Let us know in the comments! By James Montgomery Hanson Photo: Mark Mainz/ Getty Images On Saturday, with less than a day of preparation, Hanson somehow managed to pull off a 12-hour live-stream benefit for the earthquake and tsunami recovery efforts in Japan. They followed that up with an early (like, 12:20 a.m. early) morning performance on Sunday at South by Southwest. And on Monday, they finally took a minute to reflect on what turned out to be a very eventful weekend. "The whole thing was a labor of love ... in the sense of nobody's really getting anything out of it, other than our desire to give and give of ourselves. I don't think I'll ever forget it," Zac Hanson told MTV News. "The people that put themselves out for this — and most of them will not really get the credit — the work that was done by the people that work for us, the friends and the colleagues that threw down and just started calling musicians they knew ... we're still having people saying they want to help out. It still continues, even though the first live broadcast is over." The SXSW 4 Japan benefit started with the goal of raising $100,000 for the Red Cross' disaster recovery efforts, and Zac Hanson was happy to report that not only did he and his brothers achieve that goal, they blew right past it. Though, after having some time to think back on the event, he's more amazed by the sheer effort everyone put out to help make the broadcast a reality. "For me, I feel like we really gave as much as we could. Nobody held anything back. I think we really accomplished something. The money that was raised, the $100,000-plus and all the text donations ... at the end, that is a meaningful amount of money, but ... it's more about that we did something," he said. "And I think the feeling of saying to the people of Japan, 'Look, we've got your backs, we're here, we're looking out for you, we're here when you need us,' I feel proud of everyone who was involved." Hanson said the next step is compiling all the musical performances — and, as he put it, there is "an insane amount of music" — into a digital album that can be downloaded by fans, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross. And he added that, though he's proud of every single person who helped out in some way, there's still plenty more to be done. In fact, he and his brothers would've kept going, if not for that pesky need for sleep. "We all finally crashed at around 2 or 3 in the morning," he laughed. "And then we slept for 12 straight hours." Donations for the Red Cross can still be made through the SXSW 4 Japan site or by texting REDCROSS to 90999. By Shawn Adler Miley Cyrus on "Saturday Night Live" Photo: NBC/Broadway Video For fans of Miley Cyrus last night's "Saturday Night Live" had to seem, like, "pretty cool," as the 18-year-old former Disney Channel Star made her first ever appearance as host on the long running sketch comedy show, alongside musical guest The Strokes. From the very beginning, Cyrus made it clear she was not above lampooning herself, self-depreciatingly telling viewers during her monologue that "Hannah Montana" was The Disney Channel's version of "Black Swan," before transitioning into "I'm Sorry I'm Not Perfect," a song which managed to walk the fine line of referencing nearly every scandal of the young performer's still burgeoning career without actually apologizing for any of them. "There's a photo of me dressed like a dude, and Annie Leibovitz tried to get me nude. For those of you who think that's pretty crude, I'm sorry I'm not perfect," Cyrus belted. "[I] didn't make a dirty tape, and pass it along. Didn't text a dirty picture of [my] dong," she continued, flanked by cast members Bobby Moynihan and Kristen Wiig. "Don't' both of these things seem worse than a bong? I'm sorry I'm not perfect." The show's midnight centerpiece was, predictably, "The Miley Cyrus Show," which continued SNL's recent tradition of having the target of their hijinks appear alongside the actor lampooning them. In this case, Vanessa Bayer, whose spot-on impersonation of the giggly, hyper-loquacious Cyrus has become a show highlight, made room on her mock talk show for Cyrus herself, who in her best impression of the night played Justin Bieber. "Did you know I smoked salvia," Bayer as Cyrus said to her guest. "Well there's no reason that you wouldn't," Cyrus as Bieber replied, looking straight into the camera. "Because it's totally legal, yo!" The spot offered up further opportunity for Cyrus to be in on the joke, dancing alongside a super sycophantic caricature of her father played by Jason Sudeikis, and laughing as Bayer introduced a 3D film called "Always Say Always" to compete with Bieber's "Never Say Never." But while she took turns playing Bieber, Lindsay Lohan and Fergie among others, the most daring sketch of the night might have been the one where Cyrus played herself, in a bite the hand that fed you skit called "Disney Channel Acting School." Alongside Kenan Thompson as Raven Symone, Cyrus offered tips for kids looking to break into the big time with a show on the young adult channel including, "On the Disney Channel, every person has to be the loudest person in the room," and, "In the Disney Channel world, any child is smarter than every adult." Cyrus also showed off some classic moves like "Reacting to Stinky Feet" and "Spying in a Doorway." What did you think of Cyrus's performance on Saturday Night Live? Which skit was the funniest? By Gil Kaufman Michael Jackson When he was alive, Michael Jackson was forever embroiled in a series of complex and expensive-sounding lawsuits. But even in death, the late King of Pop is the subject of major legal action. None could potentially be bigger than the wrongful death lawsuit filed by the pop icon's mother, Katherine Jackson, against concert promotion giant AEG Live. Reuters reported that a Los Angeles judge ruled on Wednesday that the civil lawsuit can go forward. It will proceed in parallel with the criminal case against Jackson's physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, who has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with Jackson's June 2009 death from an overdose of the powerful surgical anesthetic propofol. Murray is the only person charged in Jackson's death and he is currently awaiting trial in that matter. Katherine Jackson's lawsuit — filed in September on behalf of her and Jackson's three young children — accuses AEG of being responsible for the medical decisions made by Murray, whose salary was paid by the touring company behind Jackson's attempted "This Is It" comeback shows in London. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos denied a motion on Wednesday by AEG to dismiss Katherine Jackson's suit, but warned Jackson's attorneys that they would need to show evidence of "fraud, negligent infliction of emotional distress and civil conspiracy" in order to win the case. The judge has already said she doubts they can prove the latter charge, because the suit does not detail any agreement between Murray and AEG to break the law in providing medical care to Jackson. "If the object was to get him to rehearsals, I don't see that as a wrongful or illegal act," the judge said. A lawyer for AEG told the judge that the company could not have predicted beforehand that Murray's medical decisions would result in Jackson's death. Court papers also show that AEG "did not choose to hire Murray" and had only participated in negotiations to bring him on as an independent contractor. Michael, who had previously been treated by Murray in Las Vegas, was reportedly the one who suggested the cardiologist serve as his personal, on-call physician during the "This Is It" rehearsals and shows. Katherine Jackson's attorney recently dropped choreographer Kenny Ortega from the lawsuit based on new information they received about his actions. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for March 22, just six days before Murray is due back in court for his trial. Jackson's father, Joseph, has twice attempted to file a wrongful death suit in the matter, though his is focused on Murray and the Las Vegas pharmacy that supplied the propofol, not AEG Live.
